It is known that the idea of creating the cartoon "The Secret of Coco" was inspired by the Day of the Dead, which is celebrated in Mexico. At the center of the story is 12-year-old Miguel, who will be embroiled in a chain of mysterious events related to an ancient mystery. He will have to investigate the events of bygone days, which will be the reason for an unexpected reunion.

12-year-old Miguel lives in a small Mexican town in a family of hereditary shoemakers and dreams of becoming a musician. But music and everything connected with it in his family is strictly forbidden: many years ago, Miguel's great-great-grandfather left his great-great-grandmother Imelda in order to become a musician and give his creativity to the public. Imelda survived the betrayal, but swore that music would never sound in her house again.

Unbeknownst to his family, Miguel is still learning to play the guitar, dreaming of the glory of his idol Ernesto de la Cruz — the greatest musician in Mexico. Miguel's determination is finally strengthened when an old photograph of Imelda falls into his hands and he realizes that Ernesto de la Cruz may be his great-great-grandfather.

Having decided at all costs to perform at a concert in honor of the national holiday of the Day of the Dead, Miguel steals de la Cruz's guitar from his mausoleum, but the first chord makes the boy invisible and intangible to living people. But it is perfectly seen by the souls of the dead who have come to look at their descendants.

Now, in order to find out what secret the history of his family keeps, and at the same time return to the world of the living, Miguel will have to go to the Land of the Dead.
